Southgate Shopping Center

The marvelous Southgate Shopping Center on South Florida Avenue in Lakeland, Florida. The center opened in 1957 and was designed by Donovan Dean & Associates. It was also featured in the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands.

  1. Very cool! Do you remember how the South East Plaza and Northgate Publix locations used to have those mosaics? I wonder if any part of them has survived all of the renovations.

  2. I believe that they are both gone now. I especially liked the one at Southeast Plaza with its tropical motif. The southwestern themed one at Northgate was not as good. I believe the Northgate mosaic was not as old I recall it being added during a renovation when I was a kid. It may have replaced an older mosaic however since I believe they were common to that era of Publix.

  3. I remember nothing in particular about the Northgate mosaic, because my family almost always shopped at the Southeast Plaza location. I know that one depicted people from around the world, in traditional dress, bringing the bounty of their harvest. I especially recall a black man and an Indian (subcontinental Asian) woman.

  4. Yeah, that was the Southeast Plaza mosaic. The northgate one wasn't even a real mosaic, it was a mural made of tile with the picture painted on the tiles.
