Time Square - Winter Haven, Florida

326 West Central Avenue - Winter Haven has done a lot of work to restore its downtown over the past several years. As a result, downtown is much cleaner and nicer than for many years prior. The downside to this is that the area has also been made very generic. Many of the buildings' details have been dulled or eradicated. On this particular building for most of its life there was a great four-sided clock which stuck out from the corner of the building. I know this clock hadn't worked for many years and I suppose that's why it was removed. building doesn't look bad, it's just that in the larger context downtown seems kind of homogenized these days.

I do like this awning.

Old Orlando Railroad Depot - Orlando, Florida

78 West Church Street - This great station is adjacent to the Church Street Station entertainment district in downtown Orlando. I've always loved the kind of story book look of this station. The station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The station was built between 1889 and 1890.

Harold Washington Library Center - Chicago, Illinois

400 South State Street - The Harold Washington Library Center was completed in 1991. It was designed by Hammond, Beeby, & Babka. These pictures were taken back in July 2005. The top of the building seemed by far the most interesting which I suppose is why I only took pictures of that one part.

Macy's - Decatur, Georgia

2144 Lawrenceville Highway - A cool 60's style Macy's at North Dekalb Mall in Decatur. This facade made me think of Venice.

Orlando Public Library - Orlando, Florida

101 East Central Boulevard - The current main branch of the Orlando Public Library opened in 1966 and was designed by architect John M. Johansen. The building was expanded in 1985. Duane Stark was the architect for the expansion and had to work to blend the addition with the original. It's an interesting building. The walls are made of poured concrete but the texture looks like slats of wood.

Chattanooga Choo Choo - Chattanooga, Tennessee

1400 Market Street - The Terminal Station was built in 1908 and the last train stopped there in 1970. The hotel opened in 1973. These pictures are from a brief visit in August of 1999. I didn't spend much time there, just a quick breeze through. I've always intended to stop in Chattanooga for a longer visit (I've driven past there like a dozen times in the last year) but I still haven't done it. It would also be fun to stay here since you can get rooms that are actually on a train car. Fun!

Midtown Bowl - Atlanta, Georgia

1936 Piedmont Cirle NE - Caught a glimpse of this fun looking bowling alley while driving around today and had to pull over. The building is from 1960 but the current facade is not that old. The photo on the county assessors sight shows a building that is much more plain. I like the ornamentation that really plays into the retro 50's vibe. The interior was OK. It was clean and well kept but not as interesting as the exterior. It really seemed like a missed opportunity.
